Basement Music PDF Print E-mail

dsc05133a.jpgBasement Music  (Richard)

This piece is about those individuals that we will probably never see or hear of .
Those people that day after day practice their craft, getting better and better, building their confidence so that one day they can step out show the world how really great they are.
This painting is not just about musicians but is a metaphor for all the arts.
The development of skill in isolation. Does it translate to an exceptional out come of success or has our society created a dualist culture of division between talent and image?
People come into my studio/art gallery excited about the art and yet they are surprised that such a unique place exists. I can’t help myself when I tell them how many amazing talented artists there are, most likely just around the corner from where they live.
I encourage people to seek out the less than main stream venues.
Basement music is really a self portrait or map of the journey that many of us are on. I just happen to re-create it on canvas.
You will see some of these people on American Idol, So You think You Can Dance and Americas Got Talent.
These shows give you the worst of the worst along with the best of the best all in one clump. Image is what is promoted.
As an artists, I can understand grabbing for that gold ring. The challenge is when you discover your motivation is wealth, fame and popularity you lose that all important creative edge.

Performance of a Cluttered Mind

Sitting around waiting for things to start I NOTICED something moving at the base of my chair.
I looked down and there was nothing. As I elevated my head I caught the same movement AGAIN out of the corner of my eye. I looked down again only to see a shadow of a chair with the face of a guitar being leaned up against its edge by a big hand. Having never seen such detail in a shadow before I etched it in my mind while I waited for things to begin.
I t was the perfect thing to do; I mean, etching it in my mind because the reality of that image was not true. I awakened in my chair.

Fingers

The Blues sort of seeped out of his fingers and permeated the stage. His essence overtook the room and the sound stabbed at our spirit.Fingers seemed to come from everywhere like an alien emerging from a host.

Lyin Cheatin and Drinkin Bourbon

He's been around and he knows the game.I watched him move his head from side to side as he told his story and I knew he was lying. He drank a shot of Bourbon and it was then that I discovered he had six fingers on his right hand.

Walking on Water PDF Print E-mail

description

“Walking on Water”

(A Stones Throw) This is a representation of a sculptural performance piece created in 1985 based on a path across the Oldman River at the edge of Indian Battle Park in Lethbridge. Cooperatively created and over seen by Carl Granzow ( Universty of Lethbridge School of Fine Arts/Sculpture Prof./Chairman) My depiction is expressionistic in form and represents the spirit of the project. Originally the pathway across the Oldman was made-up of strategically placed stones that could be walked on. As a person progressed across the river the stones became further apart forcing the participant to leap from stone to stone.
