How are you going to hang that painting? This whole process looks much more complicated than it actually is.
I’ve been hanging work for years and it seems I’ve reduced the process to what’s the simplest. There are as many ways to hang art as there is art and this is my way. I generally don’t worry about what the hanging apparatus looks like because no one will see it. The purpose of hanging a painting is functionality. I use what is around my home or studio to expedite the process, kind of a Red Green method to hanging art. Remember when you’re hanging a painting you want it to be straight and to stay on the wall where you put it.
Here are some things you’ll need Tools Hammer Wire Cutters Screwdriver Pencil Materials Masking Tape Wire Nails / Hangers Screws
I will be using a wire with 2 nails or hangers for greater stability and leveling. I have propped the painting up for demo purposes only, you will want to lay it on a table or the floor.
Placement of the wire on Canvas 1. Measure 1/3 distance down from top of painting and mark both sides with your pencil. 2. Put 1 inch screw on the inside lip (leave enough room to wrap wire on screw) of the stretcher parallel to the mark you made. 3. Do the same on the other side of the canvas/stretcher frame. 4. Take your wire and rap the loose end around one screw twisting it firmly then pull the wire to the other side. 5. Cut the wire leaving an excess of about 5-6 inches. 6. Rap the wire around the other screw leaving about an inch of slack in the wire. 7. Tape the loose end of the wire (if you have to adjust the slack or position of the painting later then you’ll have extra wire to do it with)
Where on the wall? This is when it would be helpful to have another pair of hands so you can stand back and see the ideal place for your painting. If you don’t have help, then place the painting in the middle of the wall and your eyes should be level approximately with where the wire is ( 1/3 down from the top of the painting).
General Information Simplifying this process is totally acceptable if you get the result you want.
Hangers may be used instead of nails and can be purchased from any hardware store. Picture hangers come in a variety of sizes and styles. Nail-less picture hangers work well but will peel off the top layer of drywall paper when removed, I would rather fill a nail hole.
Wire is also available at most hardware stores.
