The right Art
Finding the right art should be about you, pure and simple.
Don’t get stressed over things like the colours of the walls or general décor.
What most people forget is that art is a mood setting instrument that should be loved and
suited to your life style. You have to love the piece, after all you’re going to be looking at it for years to come.
Buying art is like dressing yourself , you want to make sure you feel good about it in the end. Art impacts space, so knowing where to place it, whether it’s a sculpture, painting or decorative glass bowl can be an equally important consideration.
Questions to ask yourself
Subject Matter
I’ve travelled a bit and through out my travels I’ve discovered an exclusivity to content in art that depends on where you go.
For example: Here at home the primary themes are landscapes and rodeo, in Central and South America you may see anything from totem style imagery and masks to seascapes and animal carvings, in Europe you will experience traditionalist styles of art and New York city will give you everything from contemporary abstract expressionism to graffiti and street art.
What artists create most times depends on what part of the world they happen to be in.
Influences
Matisse was influenced by the young native women he saw in Tahiti. It is said his heightened use of colour started after one of his visits there.
When I look at other artists work I look for influences in their work and if they aren’t immediately apparent I will try to get more information about them. What an artist paints will sometimes tell you where they’ve been or at very least what artists they’re looking at. If you want to know what an artist's influence is, just ask them.
What does this have to do with buying art?
Authenticity, unique and original are all words you’ll see over and over again when it comes to Fine Art. I personally think there is no such thing as 100% original or unique art , every thing has to come from somewhere and artists are notorious for borrowing, manipulating and even steeling ideas that inspire them.
In this day and age the most you can hope for is authenticity based on an artists experience. Most times the best artists will have a comprehensive body of work that describes their visual journey, which means they are systematically working through concepts and processes.
Every finished sculpture , painting, ceramic piece represents preliminary drawings, ruined pieces and hundreds of hours of thought, not all at once but over the years, which all comes down to that one moment when everything comes together.
When buying original work take a good look at the artists reputation, experience and body of work because that will tell you where they’ve been, how they got here and maybe even where they’re going.
