Paint with your fingers Most of us have done it when we were kids so what's wrong with doing it now. Finger painting is such a childish term and yet it describes a very natural way of expressing ones self. Should we as adults abandon those childlike experiences or should we embrace them? Many artist spend their lives trying to recapture those moments that are pure and unfettered by so called adult experience. Rejected, becomes much simpler times of which creating art was for pure pleasure and no preconceived ideas. I once had a conversation with a fellow artist that was experiencing a degree of success and I asked him if he had ever painted with tools other than brushes or palette knives. Indignantly he responded, "No!,I would never use anything except the most traditional of painting tools". I think I must have had a surprised look on my face because I couldn't understand what was more "traditional" than fingers, hands or even toes. I always thought I was a purist when it came to painting because I liked oils , their feel, how they smell , how they look and the endless possibilities of how to apply them. I never thought painting should be limited to static systems of creation. Digging in with fingers to create streaks of overlaid paint with smears of colour and spontaneous patterns was something I would dream of from time to time. Incredibly freeing and expressive is why all artists should embrace childlike tendencies, like "painting with fingers", after all there is nothing purer than seeing art through the eyes of a child.
