The surrealists regarded him as a sort of Freudian Avant la lettre. It is certain today that his paintings have a very definite significance and were not subconscious expressions. The chronology of Bosch’s paintings is unclear but it is almost for certain that one of his earliest works was “Crucifixion” (Brussels)
Bosch is sometimes compared to Bruegel and yet Bosch’s fantasy is far more inventive having deeper levels of symbolism with pure erotic scenes.Bosch almost seams to contradict the very essence of morality with the painting of alter pieces representative of heretical cults addicted to orgiastic rites. One of the most interesting things about Bosch is that forgeries of his work began to appear signed by Bosch: for example “Seven Deadly Sins” which is now excepted as authentic.Other work by Bosch: “Cure for Madness” and Christ Mocked.
