“Walking on Water”
(A Stones Throw) This is a representation of a sculptural performance piece created in 1985 based on a path across the Oldman River at the edge of Indian Battle Park in Lethbridge. Cooperatively created and over seen by Carl Granzow ( Universty of Lethbridge School of Fine Arts/Sculpture Prof./Chairman) My depiction is expressionistic in form and represents the spirit of the project. Originally the pathway across the Oldman was made-up of strategically placed stones that could be walked on. As a person progressed across the river the stones became further apart forcing the participant to leap from stone to stone.
Inevitably the subject falls into the water. The original project created tension, humor and images of splashing water, flailing limbs and verbal spectacle. What I wished to capture was the drama and tension of the whole performance. Vivid blues and whites, shadow and light and dynamic brush strokes represents the true spirit, energy and nature of the piece. Carl Granzow past away this year (2009) so I dedicate this painting to him; my teacher and friend.
